1. While vacationing on board Carnival Cruise in July ‘08, one of our port of call was San Juan, Puerto Rico. If you ever have the opportunity to visit this vibrant city, one of the many must-see locations is the historic and very well preserved Fort El Morro, located on what seems to be at the very tip of the island.

The view from within this old Spanish fortress is breathtaking. Walking through the tunnels, courtyards, seeing cannons and jail cells with the deep blue colors of the Atlantic ocean as a backdrop makes one feel as though you’ve been transported back to the times of colonial battle.

Needless to say the place is ideal for history buffs but in particular for photographers. Follow a demanding tour of the site, I was able to capture this photo from inside the restroom. It was taken with a Fisheye Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G lens and the photograph I resulted submitting to a contest held by Currents Magazine in association with Carnival line.

Two months later I’m delighted to announce the I was among the winners of the competition and as a award I’ll be receiving a digital camera (don’t know specs or model, just that it’s valued at $250) and the honor of having my photo grace the June issue of their magazine. The prize is simply a bonus compared to the extra motivator that’s reinforced my passion to continuing shooting after being recognized for something I’ve captured.

Update: In regards to the camera specs that I wasn’t too sure about initially, to my surprise, I was awarded a Nikon CoolPix L100. Pretty sweet! The best part is that’s it’s a Nikon, which easily compliments my D90.
