Kindle Me Too
I was slightly peeved when Steve Jobs reacted to Amazon’s eBook reader, the Kindle, a couple of months ago by saying that it “doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, it’s just that people don’t read anymore” and I consider myself part of that 40% of the population that actually does enjoy indulging in a good book. To Steve, the only books people really need are MacBooks.
I’m avid an reader and if you know me then you’ll know that. I’m not the kind of person that would take it as an offense if you were to give me a B&N gift card because I would gladly shop for books and magazines with it. With the exception of a few books that I keep shelved as a part of my collection, there’s no question that the amount of books itself will inevitably overflow too much; a fact that was brought to my attention even more by my girlfriend over the week when I came home with 4 more literary works and no space to place them. In comes the Kindle.
Perhaps for those who don’t read much would find the Kindle too expensive ($400) to purchase. I’m somewhat of a hobbyist in electronics and I have to say this is one I have no guilt over buying. I won’t delve into all the specs of the device because I will just be reiterating Amazon’s words but one thing I will say is that the Kindle’s strengths lie in being able to read through a book that interests you but you don’t necessarily feel the need to display, lend, or re-read in the future. Add to that the ability to purchase books wirelessly on to the device and the ability to carry around a virtual library in your hands without any significant weight is also a huge plus.
There’s currently a backorder on the Kindle but it will be shipped as soon as they become available and distributed in a first-come first-serve basis. All I can do at the moment is read more reviews on it. I love paper, color and the great feeling of a well designed, printed and binded book. The smell of a new book and the magic felt turning its beautiful pages always made me think that an electronic device will never fit these “material” expectations and although it may not, I’m getting it more for conveniency.
