1. Defining Your Style

Tuesday nights are uneventful as far as entertaiment for me. There’s nothing notable enough to make me rush to the TV, so lately I’ve opted to watch American Idol and while there’s no particular artist that stands out, there’s a common theme that’s intrigued me more than their performances which is this whole aspect of finding yourself.

None of them would have made it this far if they didn’t have the vocals, the charisma and natural born eagerness to want to be a singer. That’s already obvious but what isn’t blatant is seeing who each of the contestants are artisitcally.

Regardless of what type of artist you are, personal style is essential if you want to succeed and avoid just being ‘another performer’. The contestants are repeatedly criticized for poor song choices and that stems from them not knowing yet who they are as an artist, which is fine because it’s all a natural part of developing on the show.

Every week is dedicated to a differnt genre of music and when they perform, it’s not so much about whether it sounded good but more reliant on how they were able to personalize something that wasn’t theirs to begin with.

I think we all have heroes and we often aspire perhaps too much to sing, draw, photograph or to do anything like them but that’s not how things work.

The ideal case would be finding your personal style, spend days, week or years crafting it well to a point where there will be no one who will create art the way you will. No one else but you and that’s a comforting thought.

You can’t force yourself into working in a certain way. It has to come natural to you and in return, what you yield will be as high caliber as your delivery. As unconventional as Lady Gaga may seem, she more than anyone knows who she is. Her style defines her and her music classifies her at being the best in her craft.

  2. The incredible ease in purchasing music on iTunes is only half the joy in going a little overboard sometimes with downloading tracks for me but the reward is also set forth with the amount of tunes at your disposal. Music that you may have never considered buying if you were to walk down the music aisle at Walmart. Lately I’ve been piling up nothing but movie soundtracks. Latest two purchases include the entire scores from Dark Knight and Transformers. Most the dark ominous tones lend itself very well for some quick amateur moviemaking and editing that I’ve been meaning to work on again aside from just photography.
